Minto Recreation Complex - Barrhaven
The City of Ottawa
Construction cost: $45M
The Minto Recreation Complex Barrhaven provides a heart for the rapidly growing community of Barrhaven. With a dramatic form and an emphasis on light and views, the Complex is an inviting and active facility. Working in concert with the fire station and school that occupy half of the 14-acre lot, together these important civic sites promotes the distinction of this as being a central hub for the surrounding area.
Program areas for the Complex include two NHL sized ice pads with spectator seating, a 25-m, 6-lane indoor pool, a leisure pool, a full size gymnasium, indoor walking track, multi-purpose program rooms, fitness Complex (cardio and weights), change rooms, administrative space and other ancillary spaces. The site also features children’s playground areas and an illuminated artificial turf playing field. With versatile program rooms that support a wide range of artistic, cultural, and athletic activities, it is a space that is open and inviting to every facet of the population, bringing in on average more than a million people a year.
A sustainable design approach with a focus on energy efficiency was a major priority for this project. The Complex is designed to achieve a Silver rating under the LEED® rating system.
