1700 Huangxing Road
Located in the Wujianchang area north of the Huang Pu River, the 145,000 SM development is part of the rapidly expanding office, retail, and commercial development within the city. The design of the plot focuses on creating a harmonic balance of building and open space as an oasis for this densely urban environment. Through the use of plazas, pocket parks, vertical gardens and rooftop landscapes, the urban site caters to the buildings' occupants and the surrounding residents by maximizing the use of landscape, day-lighting, and environmental harmony on the site.
The client for the office tower requested a single tenant 22-story office tower that was not “glass.” As a response to creating a solid tower, the design focused on the creation of a terra cotta sleeve that would give the feeling of solidity, still provide views, but also conform to the Shanghai energy code while shading the building. The lobby was requested to be solid as well, so the design incorporates ribbons of black granite along with a 25 meter tall feature wall. The simply shaped building is designed to maximize tenant flexibility, day-lighting, and energy use. The tower's top beacon contains multiple double height conference spaces and an expansive executive conferencing floor. The bold red terra cotta and black granite tower provides a distinct design statement for the company and a landmark within the Yungpu district. The building is part of a mixed-use district and is intended to be a new anchor for a developing district in Yangpu District of Shanghai.
