Perkins+Will has begun designing the interiors of Whitman-Walker Health’s space at the iconic Elizabeth Taylor Medical Center site in the 14th Street, NW corridor. The redevelopment of this important historic site will include space for several core services of Whitman-Walker Health. The design will honor both the history of Whitman-Walker and the legacy of its flagship location at 1701 14th Street, NW, which was dedicated in 1993 by Elizabeth Taylor. The renovation is part of a larger redevelopment of the site that will include retail and resident uses. Perkins+Will also designed the interiors of Whitman-Walker’s largest medical facility a few blocks away, which opened in 2015.
“In this second Perkins+Will partnership with Whitman-Walker, we’re not only designing to optimize health and wellness, which is at the heart of what we always do, but we’re also celebrating the medical center’s longstanding relationship with, and positive impact on, the community,” said Nancy Gribeluk, who is leading the team of designers that includes David Cordell, Haley Nelson, and Taylor Sticklin.
For nearly 40 years, Whitman-Walker Health has been committed to serving the needs of the LGBTQ community and those living with HIV. This facility as well as the organization’s three other locations will serve Greater Washington’s residents with medical care, dental care, behavioral health, legal services, youth programming and many other wellness and support services.
“This new design for our spaces will celebrate Whitman-Walker’s many successes. It will reflect the dignity, respect, and love we show for every person, provide a welcoming gathering place for the community while also serving the expanding needs of core services of the organization,” said Naseema Shafi, Deputy Executive Director of Whitman-Walker Health.
