Mashreqbank initiated a competition for the design of their new headquarters building in the Burj Khalifa District in Downtown Dubai.
In response to the requirements, we created an exciting and iconic building inspired by the concept of a lantern with the skin is based on the Arabic idea of Mashrabia, based around a traditional Islamic pattern and on the Khatim, a symbol popular in Islam and used by the bank.
Rather than extrude the available accommodation over the available height, the scheme attempts to minimise the number of floors by utilising the most efficient floor plate that can be devised. This would have resulted in a short and stumpy building, however we have extruded the elevations to enclose a ‘lantern’ at the top of the building. This gives the building its proportions and its iconic quality. The space at the top of the building is used to house special functions, the boardroom, the VIP Lounge and the auditorium in three different sized pods. The base of the lantern can be used as a banqueting suite. During the day the Mashrabia around the lantern casts an ever changing pattern of light and shade. At night the lantern will be lit and will become an iconic landmark on the skyline of Dubai.
