As part of Atlanta Public Schools' transformation to Smaller Learning Communities, Perkins+Will was commissioned to redesign D.M. Therrell High School to support three established learning academies existing within the school. Replacing the majority of the old structure, a new three story classroom building was positioned between the existing gymnasium and theater that were retained and renovated as part of the project. Each academy is supported by career tech, science and computer labs as well as distributed administration and support staff. The new D.M. Therrell campus includes the following academies: Schools of Business and Entrepreneurship, Health Science and Research, and Law and Public Policy.
A new media center and cafeteria are collocated at the center of the school, encouraging student use throughout the day in the form of open, transparent spaces. Together with the classroom building, these spaces frame a new courtyard that becomes the heart of the school, bringing large amounts of natural daylight and views to all. Other sustainable strategies in the project include bio-retention and rainwater harvesting along with solar screening and energy efficient mechanical systems throughout.
