Active by Design: Seventeen Staircases for Fit City 8

From our Ideas+Buildings Blog

Today is Fit City 8, a conference that prompts our industry to consider how the “design of the built environment can create opportunities for increasing physical activity and access to healthier food and beverages.” Now in its eighth year, Fit City has grown substantially since its original founders, the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, teamed up. That original collaboration has not only produced a successful series of conferences, it has also spurred further collaborations and significant research in this relatively new field, resulting in major milestones such as the publication (and implementation) of New York City’s Active Design Guidelines. Perkins+Will is proud to not only be a participant in Fit City and a contributor to the Active Design Guidelines, but also to be playing an ongoing role in making the built environment healthier overall, both for the planet and for people.

In honor of today’s conference, check out the following seventeen staircases. These gorgeous designs set the stage so that you can’t help but want to take the stairs, whether you’re into fitness or not. Which, frankly, is the whole point.
